Assam Osbeckia is a perennial, erect shrub reaching
2.5-3.5 m in height. It is named for the heart-throb of Assam, the late
legendary singer, lyricist, film maker, actor, poet, nature lover
Zubeen Garg.
Its stems are quadrangular when young and hexagonal when mature,
covered in rigid hairs. The leaves are opposite, with long stalks and
have a glossy dark green upper surface. They are linear-lanceshaped,
12-20 x 1.5-2.3 cm, with 3 nerves. The inflorescence consists of a
branch-end compound panicle with 10-25 flowers. Each flower has four
petals that are pink and hairless, with a unique structure of stamens
and an ovary that is fused to the hypanthium. The sepals have frilly
margins, and often fall off. The capsule is urn-shaped and contains
numerous curved seeds. As of now Assam Osbeckia is known only from
Manas National Park in Assam.
